Hi Rob, Im in Ireland so i dont know about your codes in the states, but if you wanted to do that here then you we need to take the flue (vent) from your fireplace out through the exterior wall and then up along the outside of your exterior wall till it goes past your roof. The regulation here is that where the chimney meets the roof, measure 1100mm from the high side of where the chimney hits the roof and this must be where the top of your flue terminates. This is very important here in ireland to get enough 'draw' to pull smoke up the chimney, this would be why you cant just take it straight out the wall between joists and terminate there.

It is however considered good building practice to leave at least 600mm clearance all around where the flue terminates in the external wall.

What I mean by that is that you couldnt have it terminating right beside a door or a window you need to be at least 600mm away to prevent ingress of fumes into your home. Windows 7 Loader 32 Bit For. Other than this my only advice would be not to put any combustible materials close to the vent, like build a fence next to it or plant a hedge below it, you know what i mean? Anyway, good luck.
